Communicating on the Internet

Email
uses client/server technology. If you have ever sent or received an
email, then you have used an email client. An email client can be
hardware or software based. The client is what allows you to preform
tasks such as reading and sending emails, along with downloading
attachments. Email client is what communicates with email servers,
which are in charge of getting the email, where it is supposed to go.
How
Email is Delivered over the Internet
The
first step to delivering the email is that your email client connects
to a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server for your email
domain. This is telling the email where to go. the SMTP server then
looks at the domain of the address that the email is being sent to
and queries a Domain Name System (DNS) server, to ask for the IP
address of the domain in a question. There are two types of
incoming-mail servers, POP3 and IMP, the biggest difference between
the two is that when you get an incoming email from a POP3 server,
you download it from the server onto the computer. On IMP server, the
email stays on the server until you delete it.
How
Instant Messaging Works
Instant
messaging also known as IM has been around since the early 1990's. I
became an alternative to chat rooms, this still allowed people to
chat over the Internet in real time. Using IM, you can send and
receive files, create chat room, and send messages to and from a cell
phone. To use IM, you will need to download the client software
needed for whatever service you want to use. From there you make an account and log in. The client, when logged in will send your IP
address to all your contacts that are online, from there you are free
to IM whatever you want. Some of the popular IM's are AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and Apple's iChat.

What is the internet?
is the world's largest wide area network. The internet is made up of millions of smaller networks. Everything you find online comes through the Internet as i connects several networks together. Originally the internet was created as a research project for the government, so they could link all their information between headquarters. Back in the 1990's not many people had computers, so there wasn't a great demand for the Internet.
What is a protocol?
rules for how computers in a network communicate with each other. They control or enable the connection, communication, and data transfer between two computing endpoints. The protocol is like a guideline, with how to control the Internet. It has a list of do's and don't's for the Internet to follow, so it can successfully connect several networks. Protocol is the correct way to connect computers through multiple networks.

Learning About Peripherals
Learning About Peripherals Notes:
- Peripherals are the devices used for a computers input, and output.
- Peripherals are devices like, a mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer, and USB.
- A keyboard reports a key press into a software program, that reads the keystrokes.
- Keyboards also give commands to the operating system of a computer. (ex. Ctrl-Alt-Delete combo brings up a task window.)
- There are different types of mice, like optical, or laser technology.
- Monitors are output devices, and there are two types of monitors, LCD and a CRT monitor.
- High-definition (HD) monitors have better resolution, which means a clearer picture.
- A pixel, which is a picture element, is the smallest colored dot that can be displayed on the screen. More pixels= more detail.
- Standard resolution is usually 1280 x 720 pixels (Width x height).
- printers and scanners add value to systems (ex. Multifunction, scanner, and inkjet).
- There are a lot of drives, and they have changed over the last 20 years (3 1/2 in. floppy drive, CD-ROM drive, DVD drive, and Blu-ray drive).
- External Drives give users more storage options, (ex. Combo Hard Drive, DVD with laser light, USB drive).
- Tower cases have expansion bays, they usually have at least one bay for an optical drive, such as a DVD, or Blu-ray drive. Different sizes and types can be loaded into the same tower case.
- The peripherals needed for the dream computer projects: Keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer, scanner, storage drives, and game controllers/ joysticks.

For starters everything about the web page makes it a valid web site, it lists the author: Lyle Zapato, it also has the created and up dated dates. The up dated date was in 2008, so it is kinda out of date. The web site does not contain any spelling errors, that I could find. Even though all of that makes it a valid website, the major part that throws the whole website off, is what it is about. It is about a aluminum Head cover to protect you from mind control, which in my opinion is just crazy, so the information is not trust worthy. Lyle is very biased, and has no way to verify his information, so you would have to assume its right, but the real answer is no, don't believe him.

Trends and Factors
What are three trends you see in computer evolution? AND why?
The trends I see in computer evolution are the size of the computer getting smaller, the ability to run faster and more efficiently, and how much data can the computer store. Today people want a smaller, mobile computer, so they take it with them everywhere and have quick access to what they need. Also, I see the trend of faster processing computers that run efficiently, so that they can get to whatever they need quicker, and easier. Finally, I see the need for more storage on a computer, so they have whatever they need right there, and not have to search through flash drives, or the cloud.
Name three factors that drive technological innovation?
One factor that drives technological innovation is being able to replicate copies of the same thing easily, it would be hard to build a computer to sell to the public, and struggle to make several to supply the demand. Another factor is how well can the device compute its power, or information. People will not want something that cant compute something accurately, or fast. Finally the last factor that drives technological innovation is its programmability, how well can it be changed to fit the owners needs.

What is POIT?
POIT is principles of information technology. I think in POIT, we will learn networking and how to navigate through a computer and its applications. With technology trending, they want us to know how to use a computer, inside and out. Along with learning all the computers applications, we will learn the skills needed to know for many jobs today.
Also straying apart from the information on the screen I think well will learn the components that make up a computer, and how they work. Also, we will learn how to build a computer, or create a motherboard. Finally, the last thing I think we will learn is how to write code for many different computer functions.
